The USS ENTERPRISE CVA(N)-65 suffered
a catastrophic fire in the
operating area south of Oahu in 1969 http://www.bigefire.com/index.htm.
The surviving aircraft from Carrier Air Wing Nine (CVW-9) were flown
into NAS Barber's Point while the ship ported at the Pearl Harbor Naval
Shipyard (PHNSYD) for damage assessment. During this same time
period, the Twentieth Century Fox epic movie "Tora, Tora, Tora"
was being filmed http://www.foxhome.com/war/tora.html.
The T-T-T aircraft were operated out of NAS Barbers Point at the VC-1
Flight Line. These photos were taken on March 4, 1969 and show the
unique collection of modern and vintage aircraft: Vals, Kates, Zeeros,
Warhawks, Flying Fortresses, Phantom IIs, Skyhawks, Skywarriors,
Crusaders, Hawkeyes, Trackers and Intruders. |
